2.9. Book-Critical Edition

Critical edition is the attempt to reach out the original form of a manuscript based on its different copies. When citing a critical edition of a book in the field of Social Sciences, the abbreviation “Critical ed.” is added before the name of its critical editor. (Example: Abū Isḥāq al-Ṣaffār, Talkhīṣ al-adilla, Critical ed. Angelika Brodersen). In academic writing systems such as APA, MLA and Chicago, the expression “Edited by” or the abbreviation “ed.” is preferred instead of “critical edition”. (Example: Abū Isḥāq al-Ṣaffār, Talkhīṣ al-adilla, ed. Angelika Brodersen). In fact, a critical edition of a work is different than an editorial publication; therefore, we need to differentiate between the two by using a distinguishing abbreviation. For this reason, in the ISNAD Citation Style, it is required to use the abbreviation “Critical ed.” when citing a critical edition of a work in English academic wrintings, and the abbreviation “thk.” (for taḥqīq) in Turkish.
